A new chapter is being written in the rich history of the English Church and the former Simpelhuis in Middelburg. Today [18 June 2024], the College of Churchwardens of the Protestant Congregation Middelburg (PGM) and cultural entrepreneur and artist André Romijn (Kunsthuis André) announce that they have signed a long-term lease agreement, which will transform these historic sites into a vibrant cultural centre.
Under the name ‘De Engelse Kerk’, these monuments will be converted into a self-sufficient, multifunctional centre that integrates art, music, education, and community spirit, while preserving the historical value of the complex. This initiative aims to enrich the past and build a bridge to our future.
André Romijn states: “This complex, a beautiful late-Gothic church built during the time of Mary of Burgundy and Maximilian I of Austria, offers unique opportunities. I am grateful to the PGM for the privilege of writing a new chapter and being part of this cultural heritage of Middelburg.”
A Place to Learn
In the new cultural destination of Middelburg, André Romijn will create a permanent space serving as an artist’s residence and gallery. Here, he will not only exhibit his own work but also provide a platform for other artists, both contemporary and from the past. Additionally, André will offer drawing and painting courses, complemented by the sale of exclusive drawing and painting materials and art books. This initiative provides a place for art lovers and emerging artists to learn and be inspired.
Rich Offerings in Music Education
The musical heritage of the building, with its largely unchanged Gerard Steevens organ from 1761, will be highlighted through a series of music and performing arts programs, where the church’s historic organ will play a significant role. Visitors can enjoy organ concerts, as well as chamber music, songs, and traditional music, all performed in a setting that fully utilises the space’s unique acoustics.
In addition to performing arts, the English Church will also offer an extensive music education program. Enthusiasts of singing and piano can take lessons provided by experienced music teachers. There is also a plan to establish a youth choir, with the goal of making music together. This offers young people a unique opportunity to develop musical and communicative skills in an inspiring and historically rich environment.
Furthermore, the English Church will organise musical masterclasses led by international professionals. These sessions offer both local musicians and visitors from outside the chance to learn from renowned experts in their field. It is a prime opportunity for intensive training and artistic growth, enhancing Middelburg’s position as a centre of musical excellence.
Cultural Themes
Additionally, the centre will host educational workshops and lectures, which will not only highlight Middelburg’s rich local history but also provide insights into general art history. These sessions, often combined with musical elements, offer an in-depth look at both local and broader cultural themes.
To increase community engagement, partnerships with local educational institutions will be sought, such as offering concert programs to students. These collaborations aim to actively involve students in the cultural offerings, making them an integral part of the vibrant cultural scene the centre has to offer. This not only fosters community spirit but also enhances the educational impact of the English Church.
An Ideal Location for Weddings
Besides serving as a lively cultural centre, the English Church also offers beautiful opportunities for personal and family events. With its serene ambiance and historical charm, the church is the ideal location for weddings, where couples can exchange vows in a setting that is both timeless and moving. Additionally, the church provides a solemn and dignified environment for funeral services, where families can say goodbye to their loved ones in peace and respect.
An Inspiring Location for Entrepreneurs and Professionals The English Church is also an excellent choice for corporate events, conferences, business meetings, lectures, and seminars. The historical setting not only provides a unique backdrop but also enhances the depth of the topics presented. Entrepreneurs and professionals will find an inspiring environment here that stimulates creativity and innovation, ideal for generating new ideas and deepening professional relationships.
Historical Heritage of Middelburg
André Romijn shares his enthusiasm: “As a creative entrepreneur, I see the transformation of the English Church and the former Simpelhuis into a versatile cultural centre as a fantastic opportunity to link Middelburg’s historical heritage to a vibrant future full of creativity. This development not only strengthens cultural, educational, and community ties but also positions Middelburg as a significant centre for historical knowledge and artistic excellence. My hope is that both the residents of Middelburg and visitors from outside will discover and cherish the English Church with all its activities.”
